化け鯨 (ばけくじら)
Ghost Whale

Once long ago an enormous skeletal whale appeared off the coast of Shimane Prefecture, accompanied by a host of strange fish and ominous birds. A fisherman tried throwing his harpoon at it, but it had no effect, and the ghost whale continued out to sea with its eerie multitude.

Very acurate reconstruction of a Roqual whale skeleton. Have you studied the skeletal structure before creating this most magnificent piece?

Ghosts are scary.
Whales are scary.
Skeletons are scary.
Ominous birds are scary.
Things that fly that shouldn't are scary.
A flying skeleton ghost whale surrounded by a flock of ominous birds will scar you for life.

It reminds me a piece of Lego that I had when I was little (it had a bid skeleton of a whale and the environment was the deep sea).
Anyway, very cool drawing! And nice colors :D

I like the concept and the way you portray the special regional relationship with a figure where that mythology comes from.

Is there a specific name for spirits in the form of burning spheres like that? or are they just a cultural design?

The balls of fire are referred to as "oni-bi" in Japanese legend.  Essentially, they're the disembodied spirits of the dead.

I always get them confused with hitodama, which are, allegedly the disembodied spirits of the recently deceased that linger near places of a lot of death, like battlefields or graveyards with freshly buried dead.
