S for Selkie by tohdaryl S for Selkie by tohdaryl
Selkies (also known as silkies or selchies) are mythological creatures found in Faroese, Icelandic, Irish, and Scottish folklore. The word derives from earlier Scots selich, (from Old English seolh meaning seal). Selkies are said to live as seals in the sea but shed their skin to become human on land. The legend apparently originated on the Orkney and Shetland Islands and is very similar to those of swan maidens.

For anyone who hasn't watched a movie about the Selkies you really must try to find "The secret of Roan Inish". It's such a great classic movie.

I remember reading a book called 'Fur' and it is about Selkies and a girl growing up, dealing with being part Selkie. If it weren't for that book, I wouldn't know much of Selkies. Great drawing! :D

'fur' is written by the British author Meg Harper ^^ I'm glad you're interested in Selkies; like I said previously, I was oblivious to Selkies and had never heard them so I'm happy I read this book c:

their also known for being seductive XP
and many common legends of these creatures revolve around their pelts. if a selkie's pelt is stolen or hidden from them, they cannot return to the sea. in many stories, men that find selkies, would hide their pelts and force them to be their wives. if the selkie wives found their pelt , they would imedietly return to the sea and never come back to their human husband. (talk about a possesive husband DX)
