U for Umibozu by tohdaryl U for Umibozu by tohdaryl
Umibōzu (海坊主, “sea bonze”) is a spirit in Japanese folklore. The Umibōzu is said to live in the ocean and capsize the ship of anyone who dares speak to it. This spirit’s name, which combines the character for “sea” with the character of “Buddhist monk,” is possibly related to the fact that the Umibōzu is said to have a large, round head, resembling the shaven heads of Buddhist monks. Alternatively they are enormous Yōkai (spectres) that appear to shipwreck victims and fishermen. They are believed to be drowned priests, and exhibit the shaven head and typically appears to be praying. It is usually reported as having a grey, cloud-like torso and serpentine limbs.

So I'm guessing I that's what those water globs were in Ponyo when the father sent his minions after the boy.

Regardless of if you did T or not (and you did, and I saw it, and I liked it, in a deliciously creepy way :'D) I like this, the choice you made to have the background be the ocean itself, the shifty but wide eyes of the Umibozu in the front, and the detail on the ship. I also like how you always include information about your drawings. If I do happen to know what it is, it's even more interesting to see your interpretation, and what you chose to include in the description. Anyhow! You're fantastic. c:

There is a theory that layers of methane or natural gas are sometimes trapped under the sea bottom, and they sometimes burst to the surface in immense bubbles. A ship passing nearby can be sunk by these bubbles, as they take away the water underneath.
